It started about 20 years ago while I was working at my first “serious” job coming out of college. A volunteer with the NGO I was working for at the time playfully liked to call me “Chicanorico”. It is a portmanteau of the words Chicano and Puerto Rico. He called me this because I am half Puertorican and half Mexican. Although I had grown up in Chicago and Chicano was more an identity that I had generally associated with Southern California, there was something that resonated with me about this jumble of words. It seemed accurate in its inaccurateness. Over time, it described both how I felt that I was perceived in the world and a way of describing how I moved through the world. It also feels like an appropriate name for me as a photographer.
I approach photography as a tool to help me document my interconnectedness with the world around me. I want to get close to the people and places that are part of the photographs I’m making. I am a self taught photographer and I approach this process with a lot of humility.
I recently had the opportunity to read the following observation by the author bell hooks and I felt like it articulated something that I have personally experienced, “All colonized and subjugated people who, by way of resistance, create an oppositional subculture within the framework of domination recognize that the field of representation (how we see ourselves, how others see us) is a site of ongoing struggle.”

Comenzó hace unos 20 años cuando estaba trabajando en mi primer trabajo "serio" al salir de la universidad. Un voluntario de la ONG para la que trabajaba en ese momento le gustaba llamarme "chicanorico". Es un acrónimo de las palabras Chicano y Puerto Rico. Me llamó así porque soy mitad puertorriqueña y mitad mexicana. Aunque crecí en Chicago y chicano era más una identidad que generalmente asociaba con el sur de California, había algo que resonaba en mí sobre este revoltijo de palabras. Parecía exacto en su inexactitud. Con el tiempo, describió cómo sentí que me percibían en el mundo y una forma de describir cómo me movía por el mundo. También se siente como un nombre apropiado para mí como fotógrafo.
Me acerco a la fotografía como una herramienta que me ayuda a documentar mi interconexión con el mundo que me rodea. Quiero acercarme a las personas y lugares que forman parte de las fotografías que estoy haciendo. Soy un fotógrafo autodidacta y abordo este proceso con mucha humildad.
Recientemente tuve la oportunidad de leer la siguiente observación del autor bell hooks y sentí que expresaba algo que he experimentado personalmente: “Todas las personas colonizadas y subyugadas que, a través de la resistencia, crean una subcultura de oposición en el marco de la dominación reconocen que el campo de la representación (cómo nos vemos a nosotros mismos, cómo nos ven los demás) es un lugar de lucha permanente”.
