Juntos Construyendo Un Mundo Sin Fronteras / Together Building a World Without Borders

In 2022, I worked at the La72 migrant shelter in Tenosique, Tabasco, Mexico close to the border with Guatemala. Initially, I also lived within the shelter and then moved into an apartment with other co-workers within the town of Tenosique itself. When I first started working at La72, my work focused on giving humanitarian aid to newly arrived migrants. They were mostly people from Honduras, Guatemala, Venezuela, Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Haiti but also included migrants from other countries. I was particularly struck by how many people were fleeing gang violence and a lack of economic opportunities in Central America. Eventually, I had the privilege of working with the human rights area of La72 helping migrants submit preliminary applications for refugee status with the Mexican government. I also accompanied people to medical and legal appointments. I was deeply moved by my experience of working at the shelter as well as the generosity, compassion, and patience that I observed on the part of my coworkers.

En 2022, trabajé en el albergue de migrantes La72 en Tenosique, Tabasco, México, cerca de la frontera con Guatemala. Inicialmente, también viví dentro del albergue y luego me mudé a un apartamento con otros compañeros de trabajo dentro del mismo pueblo de Tenosique. Cuando comencé a trabajar en La72, mi trabajo se centró en brindar ayuda humanitaria a los migrantes recién llegados. En su mayoría eran personas de Honduras, Guatemala, Venezuela, Nicaragua, El Salvador y Haití, pero también incluían inmigrantes de otros países. Me llamó especialmente la atención la cantidad de personas que huían de la violencia de las pandillas y la falta de oportunidades económicas en América Central. Eventualmente, tuve el privilegio de trabajar con el área de derechos humanos de La72 ayudando a los migrantes a presentar solicitudes preliminares de estatus de refugiado ante el gobierno mexicano. También acompañé a personas a citas médicas y legales. Me conmovió profundamente mi experiencia de trabajar en el albergue, así como la generosidad, la compasión y la paciencia que observé por parte de mis colegas en La72.
